From the early 70s, video games have helped define geeks in all walks and stages of life. If you are a geek, it is likely you play video games, or at least have a respect for those that do. The Nintendo Wii has worked to bridge the divide between hard-core gamer geeks, and other casual geeks by providing video game entertainment for all ages and faces. The Wii allows you to play tennis without leaving your living room, or start a new fitness regime to obtain that rock solid booty you have always dreamed of. Thanks to a group of geeks which call themselves the Wiitles, the Wii experience is taken to a whole new level.
The Wiitles are a contemporary rock band made up of members Ryan Peoples, Nick Kneece, Steven LeGrand, Ian Vargo, and Matt Gilbert. However, unlike any other rock band ever, the group plays tunes using only Wii remotes. The band’s remotes are used to control a graphical development environment for music which allows the members to sample tracks, sounds, and loops by performing various moves and pushing buttons on the controls. Unlike traditional bands, the group also has a member programmer who transforms the musical sounds into a form that can be played by using the Wii remote.
All the Wiitles members have long been sound fanatics and also play “real” instruments, which they use to combat non-geek hypocrites questioning their legitimacy. The intentions of the band are truly geeky at heart. “We just want to be internet famous, like guys who have 3 million hits on Youtube but can’t afford the rent. That’s us”, explains one group member. After all, “music is life, music is love”, lead signer Ryan Peoples proclaims. Isn’t that the truth.
As good fortune would have it, the Wiitles will be joining us for Geekend 2010. The sultans of rock will be leading a panel on Friday, November 5th titled “Repurposing For Art”. During this panel, band members will discuss why the Wiitles were formed and their purpose and position within the art repurposing movement. Later that evening, all Geekend attendees will be treated to a special concert from the band during Friday’s cocktail hour. Geeky music and beverages. It doesn’t get much better than that.
