So, Geekend’s host city is the wonderful Southern metropolis of Savannah. Maybe this hip, riverfront town is one you have called home for years. Maybe this year’s Geekend will be the first time you experience the wonder and historical beauty of this gem below the Mason-Dixon line. Regardless, we think Savannah is awesome, and many tend to agree.
Savannah has developed a thriving culture of creativity over the years and is a melting pot for some of the country’s most in-demand trendsetters. In short, geeks run this town. Nicknamed the “Creative Coast,” Savannah produces creative talent from its base of 49,000 students, many of whom focus on art, design, and technology. The city is host to tons of art galleries, one of the largest music festivals on the East Coast, and several of the world’s most cutting-edge tech companies. The creative juices are always flowing in Savannah, making it the ideal location to geek out.
Aside from being a geektopia, Savannah is also a favorite site for people from all walks of life. The historic Southern architecture and exquisite buildings are highly reputable throughout the world and provide some excellent site seeing. Throughout the city you’ll find trees lined with beautiful Spanish moss (which is actually neither Spanish nor moss; figure that one out), a staple of Southern foliage. You can always stop and relax at one of the many parks and squares, including the famous Forsyth Park. Don’t forget to check out Chippewa Square and see the site where Forrest Gump sat on the bench in the opening scene of the movie.
How’s the food? We thought you would never ask. Savannah offers many scrumptious restaurants ranging from good-ole Southern barbecue to fresh-caught local seafood joints. Renowned cook and all-American sweetheart, Paula Deen, happens to call Savannah the home of her famous restaurant, The Lady and Sons (a Geekend sponsor). Whatever you are in the mood for, you surely won’t go hungry in Savannah. Oh, and the nightlife isn’t too shabby either. With tons of bars and clubs, and thousands of totally sweet people to hang with, you will most definitely be shown a good time. We also were not lying when we said there is not an “open container” law. Feel free to walk around downtown carrying your favorite adult beverage in a to-go cup. Many concur: there is nothing much cooler than taking a Savannah craft brew for the road.
Geekend’s early November dates correspond with some of Savannah’s nicest weather. With temperatures typically in the low to mid 70s during that time, it is the perfect climate for walking around town. When you are not at the conference, be sure to take advantage of the perfect conditions and soak up all Savannah has to offer. We don’t want you to miss out on anything in this coastal paradise city. This may be your first time in Savannah, but we can assure you it will likely not be your last.
